The 4 Best Shooting Ranges in Calgary That Might Just Make You an Expert Marksman
Just recently, I ended up doing a marathon of one of my favorite spy franchises. I love the action and can’t deny just how cool the main character is. I especially admire his sharpshooting prowess.
Now, I know I can’t exactly be that suave in real life, but I wanted to see if I could try to be like him for a bit. Specifically, I wanted to see how I’d fare as a gunner. But as someone who has never really held a gun before, I knew I had to go somewhere legit.
After some trial and error, I’m pretty confident that I’ve found some great options in the city. Below, I’ve listed the gun ranges in Calgary where you can put your shooting skills to the test.
1. Straight Shooters Indoor Range
Address: 1305 33 St NE
Contact details: +1 403 460 9364
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Sunday – 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Straight Shooters Indoor Range is Calgary’s leading target practice spot, and for good reason. They have systems in place to make sure that all of their members have the best time possible.
First of all, there’s only a limited number of memberships, so it never feels busy or crowded.
Although if you already have a PAL (Possession and Acquisition License), they’ll happily provide a day pass. Their memberships are mostly for the safety of unlicensed customers.
It’s also great that all of their ranges only have 2 shooting lanes. As someone who still gets nervous holding guns, I appreciate how private it feels, helping me focus on my aim more.
And if it’s your first time, they’ve got a lot of professional and super patient staff members who will guide you on how to handle a firearm properly. They’ll even pick out a gun that suits you!
Pro tip: If you bought a gun from a verified Canadian firearm dealer in the past month, they’ll give you 1 hour of range time so you can test it out for free. Just show them your receipt and you’re good to go. |

Address: 7130 Fisher Rd SE, Bay 4
Contact details: +1 403 451 1777
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Sunday – 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
If you’re still unsure whether shooting is for you, Calgary Shooting Centre is the place to go to. They’re the most accessible range in the city, while still having tons of reliable safety measures.
This is actually the first range I went to since they welcome walk-ins, unlike a lot of other spots. The only condition is that you have to bring at least 1 buddy with you, and your group has to be okay with being supervised at all times.
From there, their friendly instructors will introduce you to a variety of firearms that you’ll have a chance to try out. Apart from being knowledgeable, these experts are used to entertaining birthday celebrants, so they’re pretty funny too.
On the other hand, experienced shooters are surely going to love the facilities here. They have cutting-edge technology, such as impressive acoustic dampening, and an advanced backstop design that stops lead dust and ricochets.
Pro tip: With the Local Heroes Program, you might get a significant discount depending on your job. The Calgary Shooting Centre offers a membership promo for firefighters, EMS staff, military personnel, and members of the police force. |
3. Swiss Rifle Club Calgary

Address: Swiss Rifle Club, Richmond Rd
Contact details: +1 403 250 3167
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Sunday – 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM
In case you’re not familiar, the Swiss Rifle Club is one of Calgary’s most exclusive shooting ranges. It began in the 70s as a club strictly for Swiss Canadians, but later on expanded to include everyone else.
Only members are allowed to enter, and it’s a must to have a PAL to be accepted. The only exception is if you know a member who can bring you in as a guest.
I was lucky enough to go in as one, and let me tell you, my jaw dropped when I stepped foot inside. The views here are stunning; It felt like I was transported to the Swiss Alps.
With scenery like that, it’s easy to see why all the members are pumped to improve. On top of this, they have premium training programs and professional tournaments that are sure to encourage everyone.
Pro tip: Despite the Swiss Rifle Club of Calgary typically accepting most of its new members in January, you can still apply to their waitlist any time during the year. |
4. A.H.E.I.A. Calgary Firearms Centre & Conservation Education Centre for Excellence

Address: 242 Avenue & 32 St, De Winton
Contact details: +1 403 256 0665
Operating Hours:
- Wednesday to Saturday – 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM
- Sunday – 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM
- Monday to Tuesday – Closed
Although some of its rangers are technically outside of city limits, A.H.E.I.A. Calgary Firearms Centre is still mostly run by and for Calgarians.
This unique organization is dedicated to teaching the public about conservation, specifically protecting wildlife and the environment. And so, they stress the importance of treating all living creatures with care.
That’s why all the targets used here are sporting clays. It essentially replicates the experience of shooting a moving target, without actually hurting anything. The first time I tried it, it felt like a video game (Duck Hunt, if you’re curious), except more exciting.
And if you’re up for it, they hold Shotgun Leagues where you can get better at hitting targets. Plus, it’s a nice way to meet new people with similar passions. They welcome all skill levels, so even newbies can join.
Pro tip: With all of A.H.E.I.A. Calgary Firearms Centre’s ranges being outdoors, their availability highly depends on the weather. It’s best to call and ask if they’re open before you head there. |
