NW Calgary Art Classes is a school opened by Ella Charette, whose stellar work in Moscow earned her the title of UNESCO artist.
Her school provides a wide range of media for group sessions, everything from charcoal and clay to acrylic and colored pencils. They’ll tailor these lessons depending on who they’re teaching, whether they be the youth, adults, or seniors.
If you prefer privacy, they offer one-on-one customizable sessions—you can choose specific techniques in order to reach your individual artistic goals.
Flexibility is another huge win here; they allow bookings outside their regular operating hours and can even come to your preferred location.
Everything seems great here, session-wise. The only downside for us is that the art forms they teach are comparatively more limited.

While the instruction is world-class, it’s important to note that there are no art courses or programs for adults.

Atelier Artista is a fine art school that prioritizes representational art (a form that depicts identifiable objects from real life)—perfect for intermediate students.
This place was founded by Brian Bunny Batista, who graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design. He also has a background in media arts and animation.
His students can choose from an extensive selection of drawing classes that cover topics like figure drawing, light, and shadow.
One of their most popular offerings is the Monday Morning Rise & Draw session, which features a different live model every week. These classes balance short dynamic poses with longer, more detailed studies.
Of course, premium courses come at a price. Luckily, most students felt the investment in their quality instruction and studio environment was worth it.
The best spot in Calgary to learn classical techniques

5. North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre

Address: 523 27 Ave NW
Phone: +1 403-221-3682
Business hours:
- Mon – Thurs: 9 AM–9:30 PM
- Friday: 9 AM–5 PM
- Sat – Sun: 9 AM–4:30 PM
North Mount Pleasant Arts Centre has been a hub of the local creative community for more than three decades.
Due to their longevity, it’s no surprise that they extended their curriculum to include the fibre arts program, focusing on techniques like dyeing, felting, and weaving.
Pottery and clay courses are available, too, providing hands-on experience with both wheel-throwing and hand-building. Not only will you master clay forming, but you will also learn the intricate details of finishing and glazing.
In addition to niche art classes, we really like their teaching philosophy; it’s built on patience, skill, and a healthy dose of humor.
The only downside we heard about is that sometimes instructors give vague directions, which confuses some students—nothing a few direct questions can’t cure, though!
They do some incredible projects here
“My daughters have come to this location for art classes and art clay camp. Wonderful instructors (special shout-out to Ms. Michelle!), and their clay camp instructor was fantastic (Ms. Ashlynn)! They do some incredible projects here! The building is also beautiful as well. Thank you again for the wonderful experience and amazing instructors!” — E Plu, Google Review
