My archery skills are living proof that practice makes perfect. Here are the 5 spots in Calgary that made me hit the bullseye.

Remember watching Robin Hood as a kid and being mesmerized by his archery skills? That’s what sparked my interest in the sport. Years later, during a challenging time in my life, I decided to pick up a bow and arrow to heal and find peace.

After countless hours at various archery spots around Calgary, I discovered some incredible places that transformed my skills from novice to confident archer.

Curious about where to go? Let me share the top spots that helped me hit the bullseye!

Jim-Bows Archery has  20-yard lanes, perfect for practicing with both recurve and compound bows. They’ve got a pro shop with top-notch gear, and they’ve been at it since 1999, so you know they’re serious about it.

What’s cool is that they’re all about providing a complete archery experience.

They offer individual and group lessons, rentals, and even a private area for bigger groups.

One of my favorite things was joining their Target League – eight weeks of friendly competition and a great way to meet other archers and pick up some tips. You can feel the sense of community there, with everyone cheering each other on.

Pro tip:

Make sure to check out their pro shop before heading to the lanes. They often have unique items available for testing right in-store, so you can get a feel for what works best for you before purchasing.

Alberta Hunter Education Instructors’ Association (AHEIA) has an 80-acre area dedicated to shooting sports, including a special archery range for members.

It’s affordable, just $6 for adults and $3 for youth. It’s perfect for families who want to give archery a try together. The facility also has ten trap houses, three skeet fields, and a cozy clubhouse where you can chill out between rounds.

One of the best parts is the Women’s and Youth Archery Leagues. These leagues are not just about improving your skills but also about building a community. They run in the spring and fall, so fitting them into your schedule is easy.

Pro tip:

Take advantage of their pre-registration option for league nights. While it’s not mandatory, it helps ensure you get a spot, especially during peak times when the excitement draws in larger crowds.

Painted Warriors is an archery range that blends traditional skills with modern facilities. They have indoor and outdoor lanes so you can practice all year round. The outdoor range has different targets at varying distances.

They have spacious practice areas, rental equipment, and a cozy lounge where you can chill between rounds.

But the highlight for me was the archery workshops. I learned so much about technique and also about the cultural significance of archery in Indigenous traditions.

Pro tip:

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to try out their traditional bows during your session. It’s a unique experience that connects you more deeply with the history of archery and offers a different challenge compared to modern equipment.
