When my Australian friend visited me in Calgary, I knew I had to make an itinerary for the entire weekend. And since we don’t have the time to plan a long road trip then a trip to a lively neighborhood filled with shopping and great cuisine sounds like a plan!
Good thing, Fourth Street is just located downtown, making it easy for us to navigate without spending much time on the road. Here, we can eat and drink from our favorite cuisine, and shop clothes and accessories—from vintage to modern.

Fourth Street: An Overview

Fourth Street in Calgary, Alberta, is a French neighborhood located in the middle of Mission District, Cliff Bungalow, and Beltline. This street is close to downtown Calgary, making it a great spot for foodies, shoppers, and even art enthusiasts.
This neighborhood is home to more than 200 businesses, including restaurants and specialty shops.
Here, you can see international restaurants offering various restaurants such as French, Thai, and Mexican. Additionally, several bars and pubs provide local brews, perfect for unwinding after a long day.
Fourth Street is also known as a shopping hub with local boutiques and specialty stores that sell unique fashion pieces, jewelry, and even home decor.
For those who are into art, Fourth Street will be a paradise to you. There are several public art installations and galleries that you can explore in the area.
And if you want to see how this neighborhood celebrates festivals (calgary festivals), you can consider visiting during The Lilac Festival, an annual event held during May.
Here, the Fourth Street from Elbow Drive to 13th Avenue transforms into a pedestrian-friendly zone complete with live music, food trucks, and various activities for all ages!
How to Get Around Fourth Street

You can access Fourth Street via private vehicle, ride-sharing or taxi services, or public transportation.
If you choose to bring a car, there are a lot of parking spots near Fourth Street, which includes both side street parking and designated parking lots.
Some of the parking lots that you can explore are Lot G0171 at 505 21 Ave SW which costs CA$6, Lot G046 at 507 24 Ave SW which costs CA$8, and Lot G082 at 520 17 Ave SW which costs CA$7.
Side street parking in Calgary is available from 7 in the morning until 6 in the evening, Mondays to Fridays, and 9 in the morning until 6 in the evening on Saturdays. You may settle the payment via ParkPlus.
Meanwhile, parking is free after 6 in the evening Monday to Saturday, the entire day Sunday, and during holidays.
Once you’re in Fourth Street, most of the restaurants and shops are already accessible by foot. If you’re a bit tired from walking, you can also rent out a Bird vehicle or Neuron e-scooter, great if you’re already familiar with the road rules in Calgary.
If you want to skip parking you can either ride a taxi or book a ride-sharing service such as Uber or Lyft.
On the other hand, you can utilize the public transportation which includes buses and a light-rail system called the CTrain.
The Best Time to Go to Fourth Street

The peak season in Fourth Street is from Spring to Summer (March to August). During this season, you’ll enjoy warmer days, making it ideal for afternoon strolls, outdoor dining, and attending events.
One of the events that you can enjoy is the Lilac Festival during May. This festival transforms Fourth Street into a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood filled with live music, food stalls, and artisanal booths.
The country also considers Spring and Summer as patio seasons, wherein restaurants get to showcase their lovely outdoor seating.
Meanwhile, if you love walking and biking around, this is the perfect time to visit the Elbow River and enjoy its picture-perfect surroundings.
On the other hand, if you want to visit when there’s a lesser crowd with cooler weather, you can choose to go to Fourth Street during Fall (September to November). You’ll also love to watch the leaves as they turn to brown and orange during this season.
You can still take advantage of the restaurants’ outdoor patio—with a warm cup of coffee this time! It’s also a great time to explore the street’s shops and art galleries without the crowd.
For those of you who want to see how Fourth Street decorates for Christmas, you can schedule your visit during Winter (December to February). Just remember to wear layers including gloves, scarf, jacket, and boots—and be ready for snowfall!
Things to See and Do in Fourth Street
1. Join the Lilac Festival

Lilac Festival is a free one-day event open for Fourth Street residents and its visitors. This festival happens every May, where citizens are encouraged to embrace the lively community of the neighborhood.
It’s also the place’s way of welcoming the season of Spring. Here, you’ll get to enjoy walking along the pedestrian-friendly streets filled with live music, artisan vendors, and food trucks.
Kids are also welcome during this event. In fact, there’s a Kids’ Area where they can play and interact with the other children, located on the west side of 18th Avenue and Fourth Street.
2. Street Art & Craft Beer Walking Tour

If you want to take your art exploration to the next level then this walking tour that involves seeing art murals and craft beer tastings is the one for you.
During this tour, you’ll get to see Fourth Street’s lively streets filled with art murals from local artists. The trip will also let you hop to two craft breweries, allowing you to taste local beers.
The duration of this walking tour is 3 hours, so plan your day accordingly.
3. Take a Stroll at Central Memorial Park

For those of you who want to see a memorial park that has been modelled after a Victoria garden then you should visit the Central Memorial Park—the oldest park in Calgary, which was completed in 1912.
Here, you’ll get to explore geometric pathways and be surrounded by tall and old trees. This is a perfect spot if you just want to unwind and relax while reading a book or having a casual talk with a friend.
