The best time to visit Sandy Beach Park in Calgary is on a hot day. Summer is the best time hands down! You can swim, go on a picnic, float down the river, and play volleyball or ride a bike.

Sandy Beach Park offers a large parking lot conveniently located near the playground, making it easy for families to access the park’s amenities. 

While parking is free, it’s worth noting that the lot is occasionally locked, which can sometimes catch visitors off guard. Be sure to check ahead or have a backup plan if you’re planning a visit during busy times.

Sandy Beach Park is equipped with several convenient amenities, including washrooms, picnic tables, and fire pits. While there are no lifeguards on duty, the beach is dog-friendly, so your furry friends can join in on the fun.

How to Get to Sandy Beach Park

By car: drive to Barclay Street and turn left on 2 Street SW and another left onto 6 Avenue SW. Then, continue onto Bow Tri SW and take the ramp to Crowchild.

From there, keep driving and exit onto 50 Avenue SW and turn left. Take two lefts from there, and you’ll arrive in the park.

By public transit: take the 3 Bus on SB 5 Street towards Elbow Drive. The ride takes around 10 minutes and you’ll get off at Elbow Drive. From there, the park is 18 minutes away.

An 11-minute drive away to Sandy Beach Park, Comfort Inn & Suites South has a lot of free stuff to offer to guests: indoor heated pool, two-storey water slide, hot tub and fitness room.

It’s a great rest stop before hitting the park. You get to relax and have the convenience of being near the park at a reasonable price. Plus, there’s that free breakfast buffet everyone loves.

Another option is the Best Western Plus Calgary Centre Inn, which is 13 minutes away from Sandy Beach Park. It’s a tad lacking in amenities but if you’re just here to have a place to sleep, then it’s good enough.

Free perks here include a hot breakfast and parking. There’s also an indoor pool, a hot tub and a fitness center, plus a lobby computer and a guest laundry.

This very quaint Greek restaurant has delicious greek platters with a nice variety that’s meant to be shared. They’ve been in business since 1983, which speaks volumes about just how yummy the food here is.

If you feel like Greek, it’s worth going and priced much more reasonable that other spots with authentic Greek food. Get the dip platter, meat balls, cheese with fire, and chicken souvlaki.

Chefs N Farmers is a true hidden gem where the food is stellar, and the owner/chef’s passion for quality ingredients shines through. Plus, they’re incredibly accommodating when it comes to dietary tweaks.

Perched above a tennis facility, this spot delivers one of the best burgers and chicken sandwiches you’ll ever try—trust us, the habanero chicken sandwich is unforgettable. 

Don’t skip dessert either; the monthly rotating treats are seriously underrated. We tried the citrus crème brûlée, and it was refreshingly fantastic.

Take a Stroll along the Paths

Sandy Beach Park is a gem for those who love a good stroll with endless options. Whether you trek up the hill to the Glenmore Reservoir or follow the scenic Elbow River all the way to downtown, the choice is yours. 

The park also cozies up to smaller green spaces near Britannia, one of Calgary’s swankier neighborhoods. It’s also blissfully peaceful, thanks to the reservoir dam muffling the hum of traffic.

Sandy Beach Park sits just below the Glenmore Reservoir Dam and is a picnic paradise. You’ll find plenty of charming tables, cozy fire pits, and even a sheltered picnic area for larger gatherings.

The upper section of Sandy Beach Park is a hotspot for dog lovers, offering an off-leash haven with jaw-dropping views of downtown Calgary. 

There’s a small parking area and even a porta-potty for convenience. Many visitors bring their pups to splash in the water, while River Park nearby lets them run free and enjoy the scenic downtown skyline.

Go Rafting

Nestled along a serene stretch of the Elbow River, Sandy Beach Park is the perfect spot for wading, swimming, or launching canoes and rafts. 

With the river being shallow and calm, there’s no need to fret about strong currents. It’s also a favorite launch point for those ready to hop on a raft and float the day away down the Elbow River!
