Best Time to Go
The best time to go to Calgary Zoo is during winter. This is when many animals tend to be more active in cooler weather. Plus, the zoo comes alive with its famous ZOOLIGHTS event, featuring dazzling light displays and seasonal activities.

Parking
The Calgary Zoo offers two parking options:
- North Lot: Open year-round at 210 St. George’s Drive NE. Flat rate of $13/day.
- West Lot: Located off Zoo Road NE. $2.25 per 30 minutes, max $13/day.
Parking is managed via ParkPlus (app or on-site payment machines). Machines accept credit, cash ($1/$2 coins), and Visa Debit via online instructions or a QR code from staff.
Parking is valid for 24 hours, with fines issued for non-payment. Members can register with ParkPlus for free parking.

How to Get to Calgary Zoo
By Car: Access St. George’s Drive from Memorial Drive (east or west), with signage guiding you to the gate.
By Public Transit: Take the CTrain’s Northeast (Route 202, “Blue” line) to Zoo Station. The North Gate Entrance is a quick five-minute walk from the station.
By Foot or Bike: Located off the Bow River Pathway, the zoo is easily accessible for walkers and cyclists. Alberta Plaza leads directly to the North Gate.

Norley’s is a cozy Colombian spot in Inglewood that’s worth checking out! The decor inside is charming, though it’s a bit snug for a big family dinner—perfect for quick dine-in or takeout.
We started with a plate of plantains and sampled three types of empanadas: cheese, chicken, and beef. Each one was crispy, light, and absolutely delicious!

The grizzly bear enjoys a spacious enclosure, while the three black bears have their own neighboring spot. Despite being black bears, they come in three unique colors—white, brown, and black.

What to See: African animals like lions, hippos, and giraffes
Destination Africa is where you get to chill in a big indoor pavilion that’s designed to make you feel like you’re in Africa. One section immerses you in a humid, steamy rainforest teeming with African plants and animals.
Another features a sprawling space where hippos either snooze on land or take a dip in the pool while giraffes graze gracefully in the background. You’ll also spot porcupines, monkeys, birds, and snakes.

ZOOLIGHTS is a Calgary holiday tradition, lighting up the season with over one million twinkling bulbs in an enchanting display.

Strolling through the seasonal displays is pure magic, and the hot chocolate stands—offering both kid-friendly and adult versions—are a cozy treat on chilly nights.

A cold food section features sliced meats, cheeses, fresh fruit, and a small salad bar. At the back, you’ll find an omelette station, while the dessert table up front steals the show with a decadent chocolate fountain.
Penguin Walk
When: January 16 to mid-March
The Penguin Walk at the Calgary Zoo is a beloved winter event that draws crowds of all ages. While you can see a variety of penguin species—Gentoo, Humboldt, King, and Northern Rockhopper—only the King penguins take a stroll outside.
These curious little birds waddle along the path, soaking in the sunshine and the attention from visitors. Their slow-paced walk lasts about 15 minutes, and it’s definitely worth the wait to see them happily waddle back to their home.
