The 9 Best Chocolate Shops in Calgary That’ll Make You Feel like You’ve Just Won a Golden Ticket

Growing up, chocolate was always my go-to treat. Whether I deserved a reward or needed something to cheer me up, chocolate was the answer.

This childhood love for chocolates definitely spilled over into my adulthood, except I’m much pickier about it now. In recent years, I’ve been going for chocolates that are exquisite and heavenly, so they feel like rewards after a long day at work.

Fortunately, I live in a city that takes its sweets seriously. Below, you’ll find a list of the chocolate shops in Calgary that’ll make you feel like you’ve entered chocolate heaven.

Address: CF Market Mall, 3625 Shaganappi Trail NW

Contact details: +1 403 286 1122

Operating Hours:

  • Monday to Sunday – 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Must-order: Hedgehogs

If you ask a Canadian about chocolate, we guarantee that their mind goes straight to Purdys. This chocolate shop has been around since 1907, and they’ve been a top choice among the locals ever since.

They’ve got plenty of shops all over Calgary, and most of them are in locations such as malls, city centres, and the airport.

This is super convenient since we can’t go too long without tasting some of their best sellers. Just thinking about the Himalayan Pink Salt Caramels, Peanut Butter Fingers, and Georgia Browns is making our mouths water.

Of course, we also have to mention everyone’s favorite Hedgehogs. These cute little chocolate critters have a creamy, hazelnut center encased in a thin layer of sweet milk chocolate. It’s pretty obvious why we can’t say no to them!

Pro tip:

You don’t have to prioritize buying just one pack of Purdys chocolates over another. Instead, you can personalize your own box and purchase all of your preferred chocolates in one order.

2. Choklat

Must-order: Truffles

Choklat may be a bit more under the radar compared to other chocolate shops. But once you try one of their products, you’ll wonder where they’ve been all your life.

Most people are surprised to hear that this chocolatier has been in Calgary since 2008. In fact,  they actually own the only chocolate-making factory in Alberta.

You can go on a tour of this factory, just like in Willy Wonka. It’s called Choklat Therapy, and it’s where their customers can learn all about cocoa and find out how they make their delicious luxury treats.

Although they offer bars, fudge, and drinks, nothing really compares to their Truffles. They have different types of truffles, including milk, white, and dark. These taste rich, thanks to the cream and butter, and they’re not overwhelmingly sweet at all.

Pro tip:

Bodybuilders and gym enthusiasts are going to be happy when they hear about Choklat’s protein powder line. This healthy supplement can help you achieve your physical goals while tasting just as good as hot chocolate.

3. The Chocolate Lab

Must-order: Chocolate Bonbons

When you get to The Chocolate Lab, your eyes get to enjoy before your taste buds do. You might even be able to spot their colorful products from a mile away.

They’ve got pretzels, dragees, bars, and more. But their Bonbons are the most popular and most striking chocolates in their shop by far.

You can pick from over 30 flavors, including Creme Brulee, London Fog, and Lychee Rose. Though we suggest going for the more unique ones, such as the Scotch On The Rocks, which has whiskey, or Mr. Mint Sparkle, which is topped with popping candy.

Each one has a different design, and the shop indicates which ones have gluten, nuts, or alcohol. Some of these flavors are even vegan-friendly.

Customers get to select up to 25 flavors and build their own collection box. However, there are also smaller pre-made boxes for those who want to try the shop’s bestsellers.

Pro tip:

Chocolate Lab’s bonbons are so beautiful that customers often serve them for fancy events. You can place bulk orders of bonbons for any kind of occasion as long as you reach out to the shop a month in advance.

Must-order: LINDOR Assorted Chocolate Truffles Bag

Anyone who loves chocolate knows about the Lindt Chocolate Shop. It’s one of the most famous chocolate brands in the world and for good reason.

They’re actually the number one source of premium Swiss chocolate worldwide. This isn’t too surprising, considering their wide range of products. They have all kinds of chocolate you can think of, from bars to spreads.

But every time we go here, we end up buying LINDOR Truffles the most. The Assorted Chocolate Truffles Pack is the best, since it comes with milk, dark, and white chocolate flavors.

Good luck leaving their shop, though. It always smells like cocoa in there, and it’s hard not to buy every piece of chocolate your eyes land on.

Pro tip:

The Lindt chocolate shop provides tons of chocolate pastry and beverage recipes for free. You can find these on their website.

Must-order: Hot Chocolate

At Epiphanie Chocolate, their motto seems to be quality over quantity. They may not sell the most products, but all their creations are guaranteed to be memorable and exquisite.

As of now, their shop is quite small, but it’s very cozy. It actually looks like it belongs in one of those charming Hallmark movies.

Inside, they have a good amount of handmade chocolate pieces to choose from. We especially like that their menu has vegan and celiac-friendly options for those who have dietary preferences.

For us, though, we crave their hot chocolate the most. It’s smooth, rich, and decadent. This is the drink I always look for whenever the weather starts getting cold.

Pro tip:

Epiphanie Chocolate is a great choice if you need a dessert caterer for a corporate function. They can create custom chocolates that have your logo or business card as the design.

  • Sunday – 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Must-order: Milk Chocolate Bar with Almonds

Master Chocolat is the brainchild of one of the best chocolatiers in the city: Bernard Callebaut. When he began his career, he learned important techniques from places known for their chocolate, such as Belgium and Switzerland.

In the 80s, he decided to settle in Calgary to start a shop. It’s been 40 years since then, and the business is stronger than ever. Plenty of locals actually consider his work as the best gourmet chocolate in the city.

The shop has different kinds of chocolates on display, so it’s understandable if you don’t know what to pick. Thankfully, they provide samples at the counter so you can just try whatever looks good.

Whenever we visit, we make sure to take home a few of their milk chocolate, especially the ones with almonds or hazelnuts. They’re very creamy with just the right amount of sweetness. Plus, the nuts are satisfying to munch on.

Pro tip:

You can learn how to make chocolate from a real expert. Master Chocolat owner and chocolatier Bernard Callebaut teaches a 3-hour course where you get to make an array of treats, including truffles and chocolate bars.

7. Cococo Chocolatiers

Must-order: The Award-Winning Collection

Almost every year since 2014, Cococo Chocolatiers has swept multiple categories at the International Chocolate Awards.

Lucky for us locals, we can sample these prize-winning chocolates right here in Calgary. They sell a box called the Award-Winning Collection, which contains pieces of all the champion chocolates they’ve made over the years.

This box includes gold medalists like the Earl Grey Tea, Nutmeg Orange, and Sea Salt Caramel, as well as silver medalists such as the Passion Fruit Caramel and Honey Anise. It’s definitely a mixed bag of flavors, but all of them are guaranteed to be top-notch.

Apart from this, they also carry chocolate bars, baking chocolate, and even products from chocolatier Bernard Callebaut.

You can pick up any of their chocolates from 3 locations across Calgary. But honestly, we wouldn’t be surprised if more of their shops start popping up in the upcoming years.

Pro tip:

If you need gifts for corporate events or wedding favors, you can buy chocolates in bulk from Cococo Chocolatiers. They can even make your customized tags or box sleeves.

8. Cochu Chocolatier

Website

Address: 429 8 Ave SE

Contact details: +1 825 431 2402

Operating Hours:

  • Tuesday to Saturday – 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Sunday – 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM
  • Monday – Closed

Must-order: ‘Racha Peanut Bark

Cochu Chocolatier was only launched in 2017, but they’ve already been making waves in the industry.

Right out of the gate, they won several awards for a variety of their chocolate, and it wasn’t just from one organization. So far, their chocolate has won medals in Toronto, San Francisco, London, and even Florence.

Behind all of it is the chocolatier Anne Sellmer, who conceptualizes and handcrafts these artisanal chocolates. We don’t know how she does it, but we’re always impressed by the unique flavor profiles she comes up with.

Our absolute favorite product here is the ‘Racha Peanut Bark and we’ve never seen it anywhere else. ‘Racha stands for sriracha, which gives the bark a spicy kick. However, it still goes really well with the chocolate’s sweetness.

Pro tip:

Keep an eye out whenever a holiday or a new season comes around. Cochu Chocolatier is known for making amazing but limited-edition seasonal menu items.

9. Rocky Mountain Chocolate

  • Saturday – 12:00 AM to 6:30 AM, 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM

Must-order: Chocolate Bombs

Like most of their customers, the first time you see Rocky Mountain Chocolate will probably be at the airport. Most people just end up buying one of their boxes as a last-minute gift before boarding.

But once you have that first bite, believe us when we say that your life will change. You’ll probably even rush to whichever location is closest out of the 45 shops they have nationwide.

The products that convert the most people into being fans are the Chocolate Bombs. These are bite-sized chocolate balls with a softer and sweeter chocolate center.

You can choose one of the classic ones, like the Caramel Macchiato Bomb or the Cookies & Cream Bomb. Or you can also go for the sillier ones, such as the Beaver Bomb, which actually has the face of a cartoon beaver as decoration.

Pro tip:

If you’re a tourist, Rocky Mountain Chocolate is a great gift to bring back home. Their packaging is mostly Canada-themed, and they even have mountain-shaped boxes that resemble the Rockies.
