Ask anyone and I can guarantee you that donuts are included in their list of top 10 favorite snacks. They’re simply one of the most delightful and most versatile pastries out there.
If you’re about to say that you don’t really care for them, then you seriously need to reassess. Lucky for you, this guide can help with that.
Over the course of a few weeks, I, along with a few friends, combed the entirety of the city to find the best local donut shops. Finally, at the end of my mission, I’m happy to report that Calgary has a bunch of them.
I’ve listed them below for all the donut lovers and those who need a bit of convincing. These Calgary donut shops can persuade anyone to agree that donuts are indeed the superior snack.
1. Greedy Donut

‘Plain’ just isn’t part of Greedy Donut’s vocabulary. Everything about them is fun, from their branding and decor to their cream-filled donuts.
It’s not just about the looks with them, though; it’s also about the taste. Besides the classic flavors you’d expect from a donut shop, they also carry much more unique flavors like ‘The Rachel’ (which comes with cream cheese and chives).
However, their superstar is the Milk Cream Donut. Although it looks just like Vanilla, it’s much more complicated than that.
The delightful filling is made with different types of milk, mascarpone cheese, and whipped cream, resulting in a flavor that’s only a little bit sweet. The pastry itself is soft and fluffy. Together, they create a donut that makes us think we’re biting into a cloud.
Just be careful of spilling the filling, though. They’re quite generous with it, so most of the regulars are used to sticky fingers by this point.

Jelly Modern Doughnuts isn’t your typical donut shop. In fact, they’ve taken donuts to a whole ‘nother level.
This bakeshop serves a limited and curated selection of artisan donuts that are organic and preservative-free. They only use the finest ingredients, which they all make in-house (including the glazes and the marshmallows!).
We just love that their bestseller is so very Canadian. The Maple Bacon is always an instant hit among those who try it. It’s a little bit salty, a little bit sweet, and just a tiny bit smoky, all combined in one delicious treat.
First-time customers would highly benefit from having it as part of a ‘Dozen Full-Size Box’ order. This way, you can try their other popular flavors as well, such as S’mores, Coconut, and Lemon Curd.

Wonder Donuts took Calgary by storm when it first opened in 2023. People were so excited because, somehow, they made donuts feel fun and new again.
Since then, they’ve amassed regulars who will passionately recommend them to anyone they meet. You’ve probably even seen their name pop up on a few foodie groups online.
For those who have never been here, the atmosphere plays a part in why people keep coming back. It’s a quaint little shop with a very welcoming staff.
But of course, the donuts are what customers go crazy for. The Wonderful Apple Fritter, specifically, has been consistently praised as the best of its kind in the city.
It has a crispy exterior that’s satisfying to bite into, but the inside is totally soft. There are also a few apple chunks here and there that give it extra flavor. Just one bite of this and you’ll likely want a whole box of it immediately.

If you’ve ever been to Taiwan or Japan, you’ll know that mochi donuts are a huge craze over there. Fortunately, we don’t need to travel anymore just to try them; Sweet Rice has already brought these delicious treats to Calgary.
Those who have never tried them will probably find their texture quite unique. With glaze, these mochi donuts will be a little crispy at first bite, but ultimately chewy on the inside.
Oh, and did we mention that these donuts are completely gluten-free? So many people with dietary preferences consider them heaven-sent.
Although all their flavors are divine, we highly recommend any of their ube creations. They regularly make ube flavor combinations, and they’ve never missed.
Recently, their Ube Coconut and Ube Cheesecake Donuts hit it out of the park in terms of flavor, texture, and presentation. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

Pretty Sweet Bakeshop has one of the most self-explanatory names we’ve ever seen. And trust us, those two words are the perfect way to describe them.
They’re mostly known for supplying treats for events of all sizes. However, they also have a restaurant where customers can stop by and sample their menu.
It actually brings us so much joy that they offer donuts in 3 sizes: regular, middle, and baby (our favorite!). Their baby donuts are only around an inch in diameter, but they’re bursting with flavor.
Honestly, it’s hard for us to pick just one of their flavors whenever we go here. So we always end up going with three — the Strawberry, Raspberry Rose, and the Sour Cherry Blaster Donuts.
They taste just as delicious as the fruits they’re based on, but of course, they’re way softer to chew on than the real thing. Whenever we have them, we always lose count of how many we eat.

At Hoopla Donuts, we’ve come to expect the unexpected. They truly are one of the most creative donut shops in the city.
They have a rotating menu of donut flavors, except for a few signature ones that people would miss too much. It’s their way of keeping things new and exciting for their regulars.
Although we still haven’t gotten tired of their Creme Brulee Donut, and we probably never will. It has a nice creamy filling within, and this crunchy torched sugar exterior that we find so pleasing to bite into.
It’s also nice that vegans won’t have to feel left out of this experience; They have plenty of vegan-friendly options in-store. What’s even better is that they don’t taste any different from their regular donuts at all.
Just make sure to arrive a little early since they tend to sell out fast. By lunchtime, expect that there’s barely going to be any donuts left.

7. Hey Sugar

Hey Sugar is the kind of place that you’ll accidentally stumble upon but never forget. Its location is a bit hidden, so it’s not that easy to spot. However, customers agree that it’s absolutely worth finding.
Upon entering, you’re eyes are going to be treated to the cutest bakery in existence. All their decor is either pink and white or floral.
They only have a limited selection of donut flavors, but believe us when we say that they’re all excellent. You should honestly get their assorted box of 6 or 12 so you can sample as many as possible.
But if we really had to pick one, we would have to go with their Salted Caramel Apple Donut. It has this thick caramel glaze that’s surprisingly flavorful but not too sweet. Meanwhile, the actual donut is moist and soft to chew.

Dough Boy opened in Calgary not too long ago, but they’ve already gained quite a following. So many locals recommend this place that you’ve probably heard of it by now.
Let us be the ones to say that all the hype is real. They’re just as good as everyone says they are.
A quick heads up though: they don’t serve donuts in the traditional way. What they make is closer to what people know as donut holes, and they put lots of sauce and toppings all over.
Their current bestseller is the Dubai Chocolate Donuts, based on the viral Dubai chocolate bars that are popular on social media. The donuts are very chewy, while the sauce is rich and has a delicious cocoa taste.
Indecisive customers don’t have to settle on just one flavor, though. They have a ‘Half and Half’ option on their menu where you can get two amazing flavors in one order.
