5 Best Ophthalmologists in Calgary Ranked by Real (and Loyal!) Patients
My aunt was recently diagnosed with glaucoma, and to my dismay, she kept putting off her surgery. I asked her why, and she said she didn’t like the ophthalmologist she was referred to—she found him a bit rude and dismissive.
Of course, I had to step in to help her find a specialist who’s not only experienced but also compassionate. My aunt had her first consultation, and let’s just say it was love at first blurry sight.
Now, I’m happy to report that her surgery went off without a hitch.
So, if you or someone you care about is in the same boat, here are some of the top ophthalmologists in Calgary that locals swear by.
How much do ophthalmologists charge in Calgary?
Ophthalmologists in Calgary typically charge $100 to $250 for a private consultation, while elective procedures like LASIK or premium lens implants can cost $1500 to $4000 per eye.
Medical eye exams and treatments for conditions like glaucoma or cataracts are often covered by Alberta Health Care, which can reduce or eliminate out-of-pocket costs. Additional charges may apply for specialized imaging or follow-up care.

Business hours:
- Mon – Fri: 7:30 AM – 4 PM

Calgary Eye Specialist Clinic is led by Dr. Deepak Khosla, who has been specializing in eye care since 1988. Before settling in the city, he had worked at top institutes across Asia and the Middle East.
His clinic conducts comprehensive eye consultations, exams, and diagnostics. Minor procedures like eyelid corrections, myopia and dry eye treatment, and scleral lens fittings are offered as well.
They even perform laser surgeries for several eye conditions, including glaucoma, post-cataract cloudiness, and narrow angles. These treatments are quick and minimally invasive, which is pretty cool.
I also appreciate their emergency eye services. Their team typically handles scratched corneas, foreign objects in the eye, chemical burns, and trauma.
While some have mentioned encounters with a rude ophthalmologist, most patients still rate the clinic highly for its results.

2. Clarity Laser Vision

Address: 1016 68 Ave SW #110
Phone: (587) 600-3552
Business hours:
- Mon – Fri: 8 AM – 5 PM
Clarity Laser Vision is led by Dr. Ahmed Al-Ghoul, an ophthalmic surgeon known for cataract and corneal surgeries. In fact, his clinic introduced advanced techniques to Alberta, like DALK and Corneal Cross-Linking.
A popular offering is SMILE Pro Laser Eye Surgery, a gentle alternative to LASIK. Instead of cutting a flap in your cornea, a tiny piece is removed through micro-incision.
They also offer ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens)—a thin lens implant that works quietly behind your iris to improve vision without removing any part of your eye.
What’s unique is their Lifetime Commitment Program offer. If your eyes need a medically necessary touch-up, you’re covered for laser re-treatments at no charge.
And for those worried about the cost, 0% financing is available.
Note that we did hear a few complaints about undesirable aftereffects after surgery.
Surgery results have been amazing so far
“The surgery results have been amazing so far. The doctors were very kind at Clarity. The location is clean and offers coffee and tea in the waiting room. Address: 8835 Macleod Trl SW Suite 440
Phone: (403) 444-4444
Business hours:
- Mon – Sun: 8 AM – 4:30 PM
As their name suggests, LASIK MD has a focus on LASIK eye surgery, which can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. And you know you’re in good hands since they’ve earned a Consumer Choice award every year since 2008.
In addition to LASIK, they offer PresbyVision, which tackles age-related vision loss while also correcting other refractive errors. Corneal cross-linking is offered, too, which helps slow down keratoconus, a condition where the cornea thins and bulges out.
To begin, they offer both in-clinic consultations (about an hour or so) and virtual options (15 to 30 minutes) if you’re just starting to explore your options.
Payment-wise, you can take advantage of their flexible financing via Fairstone, so you don’t have to pay everything upfront.
Just remember that their ophthalmology services are comparatively limited.
The best decision I’ve ever made
“I got LASIK 11 years ago, and it’s still the best decision I’ve ever made. After a lifetime of wearing glasses (since age 9), the convenience and clarity were—and still is—life-changing. I could never wear contacts (couldn’t touch my eyes without fainting), but now I’m totally lens-free and frames-free (except for cute sunglasses). I get dryness, but I’m on screens most of the day (job-related). The eye doctors/staff were always professional and kind. If you’re looking for a review because you’re on the fence, here it is: I highly recommend LASIK.”

He’s known for Refractive Lens Exchange, a great alternative to laser eye surgery, especially for those over 40. These advanced lenses provide clear vision at all distances and are designed to be a long-term, possibly life-long solution.
For those dealing with chronic dry eyes, his clinic also offers Intense Pulsed Light and Low-Level Light Therapy—two advanced treatments aimed at improving tear quality.
And unlike other ophthalmologists, he offers cosmetic eyelid surgery, which not only provides a more youthful look but also improves eyelid function.
It’s worth noting that former patients have complained about Dr. Yau’s rude or condescending bedside manner.
He is one of the best I have ever had

I knew I was in good hands for my eye problems and my cataract surgery. I can’t believe how much I’ve missed out in all the past years, and it’s all THANKS to the great Dr Yau. He’s very experienced, kind, and professional. I’ve worn glasses for 67 years(contacts for 50) and cannot believe how great my 20/20 vision is.
