Last summer, my friend’s daughter took swimming lessons at a nearby gym. So, when their family took a trip to Sikome Lake—one of the best lakes near Calgary—he expected her to at least know the basics.

Let’s just say he felt scammed. It seemed the only thing his daughter learned to do was stay afloat—and she wasn’t even good at it!

To console him, I agreed to ask around for top-tier swimming lessons in the city. I really got into it, too; I called up swim schools and even interviewed parents.

I finally narrowed it down based on his preferred location and budget. After a month or so, he reported that his daughter was now more confident in the water.

If you or your loved one needs that little extra push, here’s a vetted list of the best swimming lessons in Calgary that are worth every cent.

How much do swimming lessons cost in Calgary?

In Calgary, swimming lessons typically range from $6 to $10 per class for group sessions at city-operated pools. One-on-one lessons generally start around $45 per session.
If you’re looking at specialized private swim schools, prices can be higher, often ranging between $350 and $720 for a multi-week program.

Since 2014, K & K Swim School’s team has taught over 30,000 swimmers. Their goal is not only to prevent drowning but also to build a genuine love for the water.

Their most popular offering is the super cute Parent & Tot lessons, designed to build early water confidence for babies aged 5 to 24 months.

Once they grow out of this format, they could sign up for their Learn to Swim program, which is for all swimmers from the age of 2 and up. You or your kids will learn how to swim 7 meters independently.

What we like most about them is their inclusivity. For instance, their Swimful (swimming and mindful) sessions are geared towards those with neurodiversities—the sensory experience of being in the water can be quite therapeutic.

The only caveat here is the price. Expect to pay around $564 for private lessons or $324 for Parent & Tot programs.

One of the best decisions I’ve made for my kids!

“One of the best decisions I’ve made for my kids! K&K Swim is absolutely incredible—especially for children who struggle in a group setting. The one-on-one lessons made such a noticeable difference, not just in their swimming skills but in their overall confidence and comfort around water. The instructors are patient, encouraging, and really know how to connect with kids. I also love how consistent the progress is; every week I can actually see improvement. The environment is calm, and never overwhelming, which was a huge plus for us. It’s been such a positive experience for our family.” — Safa Abu Kaf, Google Review

My four-year-old was able to float unassisted

“Sabrina was such an incredible instructor. She made my son feel at ease and also gave me confidence to trust his skills!! In just five weeks, it’s like I left the program with a brand new kid who loved the water and was able to float independently with no life jacket. My four-year-old was able to float unassisted for over a minute!! I was in shock! I can’t wait to continue with Swim Kids to ensure he keeps up with this life skill!” — Rebecca Nguyen, Google Review

My boys are now confident in the water

“Our 2 boys, aged 3 and 5, absolutely loved each lesson with Ms. Sabrina (and the one with Ms. Holly when she covered). They couldn’t wait to go each day. It was well worth the price and commitment. They are now confident in the water, love swimming under water, can flip on their backs and float among other skills, and continuously ask to practice all the skills they learned. We are very impressed by how quick they picked up on the skills, and I think this is a testament to the format of the program (1:1, 4 days/week). Would recommend to everyone!” — Zofia Wozniak, Google Review

For over four decades, British Swim School has believed that every swimmer deserves to feel confident and safe in the water, no matter their age.

It’s probably fitting that they offer classes for all ages, from the Tadpole Level (3 months to 36 months) to Dolphin, which is open to everyone, from babies to seniors.

Swimmers begin with an assessment to find the right program for their age and skill level. This will make sure you won’t get too bored if the class is too easy, or overwhelmed if it’s too tough.

Once you or your child is placed, you can feel good knowing that all lessons are conducted by instructors who have completed the comprehensive British Swim School training. Plus, they hold national certifications in lifeguarding and first aid.

The only weakness we’ve learned is that some parents have complained about paid classes not being rendered, nor refunded.

Pros

  • Over four decades of experience
  • Offers classes for all ages
  • Conducts a swim assessment
  • Trained and certified instructors

Cons

  • Paid classes were not rendered

They offer a makeup class with a notice in advance.” — Hyejoo Kim, Google Review

Now, my son is a little shark
