5 Best Mexican Restaurants in Calgary for Your Next Taco Fix
I’m all for cheap date restaurants if the food does the flirting! Give me hot tortillas, juicy pork, and salsa with enough kick to keep things interesting.
Fancy dining has its moments, but great Mexican food doesn’t need a white tablecloth to impress me. The best Mexican restaurant in Calgary should win me over with flavour first and fuss second.
So I tracked down the spots serving tacos, fajitas, and margaritas worth leaving the house for. Bring an appetite, because restraint may not survive this list!
How much does it cost to dine in a Mexican restaurant in Calgary?
Dining at a Mexican restaurant in Calgary can cost around $12 to $70+ CAD per person. Fast-casual meals are the cheapest option at about $12–$18, usually for burritos or standard taco plates.
Mid-range cantinas typically cost $25–$40 per person. This can cover dishes like birria tacos and fresh guacamole.
Upscale or trendy Mexican restaurants can run $45–$70+ per person. Expect premium tacos, larger plates, or sharing platters at this level.
Margaritas and cocktails generally cost $12–$18 each. Mexican beers and desserts like churros are usually around $7–$12.
1. Chile N Mango

Website
Address: 3300 14 Ave NE, Unit 1A
Contact: (587) 879-9024
Schedule: Tuesday–Thursday, 11 AM–8 PM; Friday–Saturday, 11 AM–10 PM
A casual taco night at Chile N Mango honestly beats getting dressed up somewhere fancy, and that’s a big part of its appeal. Birria, tacos, margaritas, and tequila tastings keep the whole thing fun without trying too hard.
I like that it works just as well for two people as it does for a bigger group. Fiesta Packs and Taco Bar catering come in handy when dinner plans suddenly expand to include half your friends.
Walk-ins are welcome, and takeout covers the nights when the couch wins out instead.
The lively cocina-cantina vibe gives it real date-night charm without ever feeling stiff.
The one catch is that only a limited number of tables can be reserved online, so the rest are first-come, first-served, and prime times can get a bit unpredictable.

“Authentic Mexican cuisine, absolutely loved it”
Authentic Mexican cuisine, absolutely loved it
Incredible Chicken Sandwich, guacamole, chips and much more to try with Great Vibes! The sandwich was incredibly flavorful, perfectly cooked, and easily the highlight of the meal. Beyond the fantastic sandwich, the menu offers an amazing variety of authentic Mexican street foods, from crispy Tacos Dorados to slow-cooked Birria.
With its cozy wooden tables and bright, welcoming window-side seating, it is the perfect place for a relaxed and delicious meal. I will definitely be coming back!

2. El Gringo Loco Downtown YYC

Website
Address: Inside Ampersand Food Court, 112 4 Ave
Contact: +1 403-401-6821 | [email protected]
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9 AM–3 PM
Lunch does more than fill a gap at El Gringo Loco Downtown YYC, and that’s really the whole point of the place. Tacos, tamales, and chilaquiles lean on family recipes and traditional slow-cooking methods rather than shortcuts.
I really like that the menu gives you plenty of choice, from birria and carnitas to pastor, tinga, fish, and veggie options.
The Ampersand Food Court location makes it especially convenient for downtown workers. They also cater corporate gatherings, which is a step up from the usual sandwich tray for an office lunch.
The catch is the schedule. They close at 3 PM on weekdays and stay shut all weekend, so this one’s off the table for dinner dates or a Saturday taco run.

“One of the best spots for weekday meals in downtown Calgary”
El Gringo Loco is hands down one of the best spots for weekday meals in downtown Calgary. Parked right outside The Ampersand building, this authentic Mexican food truck serves up incredibly flavorful dishes that never disappoint. The tacos are packed with perfectly seasoned meat, fresh toppings, and that homemade touch that makes all the difference. Their burritos are hearty and satisfying—great value for lunch!
The service is fast and friendly, even during the busy noon rush. You can tell they care about quality and their customers.

“A great little taco truck!”
A great little taco truck! Good variety, big flavour. Got the trio of tacos (Beef, Pastor & Carnitas) and the Carnitas was my favourite. Will definitely be back to try other options – went back to my desk stuffed.

3. Guac Mexi Grill

Website
Address: 68 Heritage Gate
Contact: (403) 457-4822
Schedule: Monday–Saturday, 10 AM–9 PM; Sunday, 10 AM–8 PM
Guac Mexi Grill is a solid option when you want something fast without settling for sad desk-lunch energy. Burritos, bowls, tacos, and fire-grilled proteins give you plenty of room to build a meal your way.
We like that the guacamole, salsas, sauces, and marinades are made in-house daily. Plus, the detailed nutrition and allergen guides are a genuine help when someone in the group has dietary restrictions.
Online ordering keeps things simple, and catering is available for casual gatherings. The Heritage Gate location works especially well for quick lunches, family meals, or low-fuss date nights.
The trade-off is the fast-casual setup rather than a full-service cantina, so it’s better suited to a quick bite than a long, lingering dinner.

“Honestly, 10/10 every time”
I absolutely love coming to Guac Mexican Grill! The food is always fresh, flavorful, and made just right every single time. Their salad bowls and wraps are my go-to—they’re always crisp, delicious, and satisfying.

“This is a hidden gem”
This is a hidden gem, and I regret not visiting this place earlier. It can beat Chipotle, Costa Vida or any similar Mexican fast food place any day.
Their veggies, sauces, and chips were freshly made, and the service was amazing. People working there are very kind and polite. The dine-in place was very clean and tidy as well.
I have found my go-to place now.

4. Birria Cantina

Website
Address: 227 11 Ave
Contact: +1 403-455-2758 | [email protected]
Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 11 AM–9:30 PM; Friday–Saturday, 11 AM–10:30 PM; Sunday, 11 AM–8 PM
Tacos alone won’t always do the job, and that’s when Birria Cantina earns its spot on the list. The menu stretches from birria and fajitas to nachos, tostadas, and even birria ramen.
We like that you can pair dinner with a handcrafted margarita instead of treating drinks as an afterthought. The cantina-style setup makes it feel more like a proper night out than a quick counter stop.
Online ordering keeps things convenient for nights when eating at home beats getting dressed up. There’s enough variety that groups with different cravings won’t end up negotiating over one dish.
The downside is that there’s currently only one Calgary location, which makes it a less convenient pick if you’re coming from the far northwest or deep south.

“The best Mexican restaurant in the city”
It’s always a pleasure to come eat here! The atmosphere feels very welcoming and family-oriented, and the food is excellent with 100% authentic Mexican flavour. I can honestly say it’s the best Mexican restaurant in the city.
My favourite dish is definitely the pozole.
My server, Erika, was very friendly and attentive, always making sure everything was perfect throughout the meal. Highly recommended! 🌮🇲🇽

“That homemade flavour that reminds me of family and home”
Birria Cantina has helped me not miss Mexican food while living in Calgary. Every dish is delicious and has that homemade flavour that reminds me of family and home. My compliments to the chef for creating such authentic and comforting meals.
The service is always outstanding; everything is served quickly, and the staff is attentive and friendly. The salsas are delicious, and they are very generous with the lime, which I really appreciate. This time, our server Erika took care of us, and she made the experience especially enjoyable with her excellent service and warm attitude.

5. Tacos Mexico Memorial

Website
Address: 3725 Memorial Dr
Contact: (403) 457-6117
Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 11 AM–8:30 PM; Friday, 11 AM–9:30 PM; Saturday, noon–9:30 PM; Sunday, noon–8:30 PM
Tacos Mexico Memoria is a genuinely bad idea if you’re the type who insists you’ll only order two tacos. With 24 kinds of Mexican street tacos on the menu, restraint tends to disappear fast.
We like the home-cooked feel behind the food, which draws from family traditions rather than a polished chain formula. The mix of meat and fish options gives repeat visits plenty of room to stay interesting.
This makes the restaurant a solid pick for casual meals where variety matters more than fancy presentation.
Online ordering also makes takeaway easy for nights when sitting down isn’t part of the plan.
Catering needs a bit more organisation, though. They require at least 48 hours’ notice and a 15-order minimum, and orders come ready for pickup without plates or cutlery included.

“Best Mexican food, excellent service and great ambience”
Best Mexican food, excellent service and great ambience. Prices were good, and the menu is pretty vast. Not a big restaurant, and I can totally imagine it getting busy during lunch or supper time. Good size portions as well. I will definitely go back again.

“It did not disappoint”
Drove across the city for afternoon Mexican. This place was recommended to me by a friend. It did not disappoint.
Food was great from start to finish. Service was perfect. The restaurant was packed at 2:30 pm on a Saturday
Tables turn over pretty quickly.
I will be returning many times over
