A few months ago, I pulled my back while gardening (well, attempting to)—the pain was unbearable at the time.
The worst thing was that no matter how many massages and physiotherapy sessions I had, my backache kept coming back.
My friend took pity on me and suggested I see a spine specialist. Of course, I didn’t just draw a name out of a hat—I did my due diligence and came up with a list of tried-and-true spine doctors.
After a couple of weeks with the expert, I stopped feeling pain altogether. Whew!
I wrote this article hoping that it would help others who have similar experiences. Check out the top spine specialists in Calgary below.

Vivo Cura Health has a team of physicians and allied health professionals who work to empower patients dealing with musculoskeletal pain.
In fact, they have a dedicated Spine Clinic that specializes in diagnosing, treating, and managing a wide range of conditions related to the spine.

Due to these premium spine services, patients consistently praise the quality of care they provide. However, we did hear whispers of some communication issues that are a bit concerning.
They sure did an excellent job!
“Wasn’t sure what to expect. I’m a little nervous going to a spine clinic. I was in pain for nearly a year and was losing hope. But as soon as I got to Vivo Cura, the staff encouraged me and gave me sound medical advice. Dr. Burnham did a professional job. Accurate. I do thank him sincerely cause I am able to walk with no pain. Maddie was exceptional and an advocate. Most importantly, she made me feel like they were there to help and not just push me through. Given the circumstances of our health care system…they sure did an excellent job! Thank you so much.” — Justin, Google Review
I can’t praise this facility enough!

2. Gateway Surgery

Not only is Gateway Surgery one of the best orthopaedic specialists in Calgary, but it’s also a go-to for patients with spine issues.
The clinic’s intake process begins with a consultation—an orthopaedic surgeon reviews your medical history, even offering virtual pre-operative evaluations.
If your specialist recommends surgical treatment, your procedure will be scheduled and performed by a certified surgeon with years of experience.
The care remains high-touch even after you leave the operating room: You’ll be provided with an ice machine and other additional recovery equipment. Other post-operative needs, from wound checks to rehab advice, are given, too.
The only downside we were made aware of is that a few patients felt ignored when they weren’t given a schedule for weeks. These delays are such a hassle, especially if you’re in constant pain.
I can now report being pain-free
“First contact at Gateway was Michelle, and then Taylor, who was instrumental in handling the process of facilitating the tests required, the consultation and arranging for out-of-province surgery. All details were handled professionally. Taylor was a pleasure to deal with. The consultation with Dr Spiess was clear, friendly, respectful and put me at ease. On the day of surgery, Dr Spiess and the staff were outstanding and supportive. The surgery for L4-S1 laminectomy and L4-S1 discectomies went well. After having spent the last two years in pain, I can now report being pain-free. The post-operative care from the nurses, Barb and Twyla, has been exceptional, and they have gone above and beyond. Thank you. When contemplating out-of-province surgery, I highly recommend contacting Gateway Surgery.” — Jane Anderson, Google Review

Business hours:

Divine Spine set out to change the chiropractic experience in 2008, and it’s safe to say they’re succeeding.
A big reason is their proprietary Electronic Vertebral Adjusting System. This provides precise, computerized adjustments that remove nervous system interference without forceful, “cracking” maneuvers.
Their system is effective for those dealing with scoliosis and chronic low back pain, relieving inflammation by working on nerve pressure and muscle tension. Basically, your body will be able to move freely and heal itself.
They even offer a money-back guarantee: if you’re not satisfied after your first three visits, you’re eligible for a full refund.
Everything seems great treatment-wise; unfortunately, we heard about their long wait times. You just might have to wait a while before it’s your turn.
Gentle, non-aggressive adjustments that really work
“Finally, a place where you don’t feel unsure about your spine adjustments. The computerized adjustments “read” your body and give you gentle, non-aggressive adjustments that really work. I had never had this type of treatment before, but after years of trying other methods, I’m experiencing positive results after only two weeks of treatments. Dr. Andrea’s approach is very holistic and takes into consideration your day-to-day routine and habits. It’s not just about fixing, it’s also about preventing. I can also be part of the improvement process by doing regular stretches, wearing my orthotics and my in-house shoes, and by keeping an eye on my posture whenever I spend any extended amount of time in front of my computer. This is a game-changer. I would highly recommend you give Dr. Andrea a try.” — Jorge Aviles, Google Review
I no longer have shoulder and upper back pain
“Been going to Dr Andrea for almost a year, and the results have been amazing. I no longer have my monthly migraines. I also purchased orthotics from them, and I can see how they improved my posture. I no longer have shoulder and upper back pain.” — ritchell facultad, Google Review

Our only concern is the bedside manner of some practitioners. Some have mentioned that they were quite rude.
